Santa Rosa County Building Inspections Urges Community to Beware of Unlicensed Contractors and Scams

Thursday, October 15, 12:30 p.m.

Santa Rosa County Building Inspections urges residents to use caution when hiring contractors for storm-related repairs. Following a major storm, unlicensed contractors and scammers may take advantage of homeowners who are trying to repair their properties quickly. Before hiring anyone to perform repairs, take a few simple steps to protect yourself, your home, and your money.

Protect Yourself – Know Before You Hire!

  • Verify the contractor's license. Make sure the contractor holds the appropriate license for the work being performed. You can verify licenses through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) at www.MyFloridaLicense.com.
  • Be cautious of door-to-door offers. Be wary of individuals who show up unsolicited, pressure you to make immediate decisions, or claim they can begin work right away without the necessary permits.
  • Don't pay large amounts upfront. Avoid paying for the entire project before work begins. Be especially cautious of contractors demanding cash payments.
  • Get everything in writing. Request a written contract outlining the scope of work, materials, total cost, payment schedule, and estimated completion date.
  • Verify permit requirements. Many storm-related repairs, including roofing, electrical, and structural work, may require permits and inspections. Don't rely solely on a contractor's statement that a permit isn't needed.
  • Watch for red flags. Be cautious of contractors who refuse to provide license information, discourage permits or inspections, or ask you to obtain a permit as an owner-builder when they will actually be performing the work.

Remember: A Licensed Contractor Helps Protect You!

Hiring an appropriately licensed contractor and obtaining required permits helps ensure repairs meet applicable building codes and safety standards.

Before you hire, verify the license and check permit requirements!
