|SANTA ROSA COUNTY, FL – During the School Board meeting on May 16, 2023, Santa Rosa County District Schools Media Services and Instructional Technology Specialist Ruth Witter, highlighted the School Board’s policies and procedures related to selecting, reviewing, and challenging school library materials. These policies and procedures guide our Library Media Specialists in selecting age-appropriate, legally compliant library collections that engage students and provide opportunities for stakeholders to challenge materials they deem objectionable. Among a number of topics, Ms. Witter’s presentation at the School Board meeting included the following:
- detailed information regarding how parents can choose their student’s level of access to school library materials;
- an update on our efforts to electronically catalog all books in all classroom libraries; and,
- the current process for parents of students, Santa Rosa County residents, and employees to reconsider (or challenge) materials they deem objectionable.
Ms. Witter is a Florida Department of Education Certified Educational Media Specialist and has worked alongside the Florida Department of Education to develop statewide training materials regarding school library materials.
School library materials are extremely important to the education of our students. As such, the School Board and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Karen Barber, are dedicated to creating and implementing policies and procedures that meet the requirements of Florida law and rules promulgated by the Florida Department of Education applicable to school library materials.
